Impact of optical noises on unipolar-coded Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers

چکیده
Noise models for both single-pulse and coded Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers (BOTDA) are established to quantify the actual signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) enhancement provided by pulse coding at any fiber position in operating condition. Simulation experimental results show that polarization noise spontaneous scattering (SpBS) signal beating could highly penalize performance of coded-BOTDA, depending on code type interrogated position. The also serve as a useful tool optimize SNR improvement trading off accumulated gain noises.

Sources of noise in Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers
This paper presents a thorough study of the different sources of noise affecting Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers (BOTDA), providing a deep insight into the understanding of the fundamental limitations of this kind of sensors. Analytical and experimental results indicate that the noise source ultimately fixing the sensor performance depends basically on the fiber length and the input pum...
متن کاملTime and frequency pump-probe multiplexing to enhance the signal response of Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers.
A technique to enhance the response and performance of Brillouin distributed fiber sensors is proposed and experimentally validated. The method consists in creating a multi-frequency pump pulse interacting with a matching multi-frequency continuous-wave probe. To avoid nonlinear cross-interaction between spectral lines, the method requires that the distinct pump pulse components and temporal tr...
متن کاملFast Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis for dynamic sensing.
A new technique for the fast implementation of Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) is proposed and demonstrated, carrying the classical BOTDA method to the dynamic sensing domain. By using a digital signal generator which enables fast switching among 100 scanning frequencies, we demonstrate a truly distributed and dynamic measurement of a 100 m long fiber with a sampling rate of ~10 ...
متن کاملNon-Local Effects in Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Analysis Sensors
Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensors have great potential to provide distributed measurements of temperature and strain over large structures with high spatial resolution and measurement precision. However, their performance ultimately depends on the amount of probe and pump pulse power that can be injected into the sensing fiber, which determines the signal-to-noise ratio of ...
متن کاملSynthetic Spectrum Approach for Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry
We propose a novel method to improve the spatial resolution of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR), referred to as synthetic BOTDR (S-BOTDR), and experimentally verify the resolution improvements. Due to the uncertainty relation between position and frequency, the spatial resolution of a conventional BOTDR system has been limited to about one meter. In S-BOTDR, a synthetic spect...
